We all know that itchy scalps are a big nuisance, especially when the itching begins at odd times and you are not in a position to relieve yourself. There are different reasons that can cause itching of scalp- mainly dandruff, dry scalp, head lice infestation and contact dermatitis. This is sufficient to give you an idea that there is no single method to get rid of the itching, but different steps have to be taken to get rid of it completely. Regular shampooing and oiling is one of the best ways to prevent it.
However, if you are already affected with an itching scalp, there are a few methods which you can try. If the cause of itch is dryness of scalp, then use a hydrating shampoo instead of drying ones and apply moisturizing creams for hair. A ten percent urea lotion is also helpful in keeping the scalp moisturized. If it’s not dryness but dandruff that’s the cause, then regular use of an anti-dandruff shampoo can work effectively. Oils play an important role in keeping your scalp dandruff and dry free.
Lice infestation or Pediculosis Capitis is also a common reason for itching scalps, because the lice bite the skin to draw blood and feed on it. Anti-lice shampoos are the best solution to this problem, accompanied by thorough brushing with a very fine comb to remove dead lice and their eggs. It is advised to continue the anti-lice treatment when the itching reduces, because lice in various stages of their development can still remain in your hair and cause itching again once they hatch from their eggs and produce more of them. Lice infestation can lead to dry scalp and ultimately dandruff.
Lastly, if the reason for the itching is contact dermatitis, then the first thing you should do is to avoid contact with the carrier carrying the allergy, use of steroid creams and consuming antihistamine medication is recommended.
