Peer pressure is something that all of us have to deal with at some point of time. Regardless of how popular is one, or liked by everyone, sooner or later you have to face it. Peer pressure in simple terms can be described as pressure from peers to act in a specified manner or to follow some norms of the group. Peer pressure can also force you to perform acts, which can be against your nature and consequently, lead to unhappiness and low self esteem.
But peer pressure can be combated if individuals follow the basic thumb rules:
• Very first know yourself and be confident. Building confidence is the sure shot way to handle peer pressure. Generally, people follow those who are confident and well assured. So if you are well assured of yourself, chances are that people will start following you.
• Always be comfortable with your choices – always keep it in mind that it’s your life and it’s you who bear the power to lead it in your way. Peer pressure is generally marked with pressure to alter choices. So don’t let them dictate you and take a toll.
• Try being the leader. It’s generally the leader who gets a chance to set the norms and is followed by other people. As long as you are the part of the crowd, you have no other option but to follow the norms. However, the moment you step into the position of a leader, you bear the opportunity to follow your rules.
• Build mental toughness so that you can resist dominance. Not everyone is blessed with mental toughness to tackle all situations efficiently. However, if one works on building mental toughness than peer pressure can be blown off easily.
Peer pressure is literally a challenge that can help you grow. It can help you to become more polished and smooth. So instead of worrying, one should try and fight it.
