Moving out of and into heated areas often can give you a dry scalp. Small flaky skin starts falling off the scalp when you brush or comb your hair. Due to the dryness, the skin of the scalp gets tight and starts itching. Often people identify this flaky skin as dandruff and get treatment for the same. This further aggravates the condition of the scalp. Actually, it is just that the sebaceous glands in the scalp are not lubricating the hair adequately.
On good days, the hair is healthy and so is the scalp. Sitting indoors for work or any other reason makes the scalp dry and itchy. Your hair becomes dull and not manageable. You should massage gently some hair conditioner into your scalp after shampoo to hydrate the scalp and loosen the dry flaky skin. Well, if the scalp is dry, then there will be dry dandruff.
So how does one take care of such scalp?
To begin with, the shampooing should be conducted in a specific way. Water pressure to the inside parts of your scalp turns the hair out when shampooing. The hair is pushed outward with the water pressure. Therefore, the hair loses manageability and people with split ends and dryness of hair can tell you that. You can protect the hair and scalp with two methods. Apply or wear a hair mask on your hair just before you shampoo. Apply the hair mask to each lock of hair and try not to get any on your skin. In case your hair are short or of medium length apply the mask all over. Long hair does not require so much of the mask so it can be applied only on damaged parts of the hair. Stroke the mask with your hands to make the application smooth in texture. Shampoo your hair after with water heated to 50 degrees Celsius. You need to first wash clean the mask slowly then shampoo your scalp twice taking care to wash off the shampoo each time and reapplying the same again. Make sure when you shampoo the second time you massage the scalp clean. Wring out extra water from the hair and if the hair is not manageable then remember to keep the mask on your for a longer period of time like 30 minutes. This is a preventive measure for your hair and scalp care. If you have damaged hair it is necessary to follow the massaging steps mentioned earlier.
The double protection system works on the scalp by masking the hair after the shampoo. You should use an emulsion on the scalp and hair after wearing the mask for the stipulated 15 or 20 minutes. Pour the emulsion on your hand and fluff out hair with the palm and fingers applying the emulsion properly. This way the value in the emulsion will get absorbed better. Then wash off the mask with plain water.
To improve the condition of the scalp skin and develop or initiate the oily glands of the scalp it is important to give such care to your hair and scalp to steadily improve their condition. Along with the care you should know how to address the dry scalp problem quickly using some additional tips:
Use a clarifying shampoo every week. This gets rid of any build-up of flaky skin on the scalp and sets loose the dead skin.
Use mild water or tepid water to wash your hair since hot water can strip your scalp of natural oils and also burn your scalp. It is true with the hair dryer also – use it at low heat.
Mix about 3 table spoon full white vinegar to water to put highlights on and bringing shine to the hair.
Wash your hair and scalp with an acidic base shampoo after you rub a bit of table salt into your scalp.
Massage a few teaspoonful of olive oil into your scalp and then put on a plastic shower cap and then bind two wet towels on top of the cap. Keep these on for about 20 minutes and then wash off twice with shampoo.
Take a lot of food which is rich in vitamins for the scalp and hair. You could use zinc pyrithione active ingredient on your scalp to treat many derma diseases like psoriasis, eczema, dandruff and many other afflictions. Jojoba can be used as a natural hydrating scalp moisturizer. The basil helps growing hair. Chamomile, Lavender, Myrrh, lemon and Clary Sage keep the scalp healthy.
To remedy a dry scalp with home based treatment, mix a quarter cup of oatmeal with water and soak for 20 minutes. Add in five drops of lavender oil or the strain of stalks of the lavender plant steeped in quarter cup of hot water. Add 5 drops of Rosemary oil or strain of the Rosemary stalks steeped in quarter cup of hot water. Apply this mix to the scalp dabbing it into the scalp. Keep it on for about 10 minutes. This is soothing to an itchy scalp. You could use Chamomile tea for the itch. Or another couple of home remedies are oregano oil and garlic oil. These are very effective against dandruff and easily available at food stores.
