What is nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology in simplest terms refers to the engineering of varied functional systems at the molecule level. It is the study which is focused on controlling matter on a molecular and atomic scale. It deals with structures that are of size 1 to 100 nanometers in a minimum of 1 dimension and involves developing of materials and devices within this range. The world of nanotechnology is really diverse as it ranges from new approaches, which are based on self assembly of molecules to the extension of typical devices and invention of innovative devices in order to ascertain whether one can control a matter on the atomic scale or not.

Molecular StructureToday there are unprecedented scientists who are working hard on nanotechnology with the mission of giving the world something unusual yet helpful. In order to understand the world of nanotechnology, we need to know the units of measure, which are involved. One hundredth of a meter is known as a centimeter, one thousandth of meter is known as millimeter and one millionth of meter is known as micro meter. However, all these measurements are very large in comparison to nanoscale. Nanometer refers to one billionth of a meter which is hundred times smaller than the width of a human hair or the wavelength of visible light.

Nanotechnology is all around us, we just need to look in the right way. There are millions of companies operating across the world who have already invented products with nanotechnology which we can buy such as ski wax, clothing and automobile parts. Most of the initial applications of this technology have been focused on material like nano carbon particles for improved metal steel, additives for plastics, improved catalysts, coatings for petrochemical industry and much more. All of these industries are marked with multi billion dollar market. It can be stated that nanotechnology is the futuristic science with applications 25 years henceforward, in the future and much beyond that.
